John Steinbeck, East of Eden, 1952
I absolutely love this book. I just finished it for the second time today and now that I’m older it definitely resonated a lot more. Such beautiful writing and wonderful characters and I love all the allegorical connections and historical references. Steinbeck considered it the culmination of his career. I definitely recommend it.
There was a film of it made in 1955 staring James Dean as Cal. I think I would be pretty upset if I watched it and it was terrible; I like the book too much… I wonder if it’s any good? Has anyone seen it?

Une édition tardive et très belle de ce grand texte fou et fascinant du symbolisme (publié en feuilleton en 1892). Illustrations de Marin Baldo.

I also just finished this book, which I had never read before and is absolutely amazing. The way Kesey writes is so descriptive and visual and beautiful.
In “Magic Trip,” the movie I just saw, there is an interview with Kesey and he says the first 3 pages of the book were written under the influence of peyote; he has no idea where the inspiration for the Chief came from…but I’m pretty sure that’s the answer…hahaha
Anyway, it was excellent, and I highly recommend it.

"The best moments in reading are when you come across something – a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things – that you’d thought special, particular to you. And here it is, set down by someone else, a person you’ve never met, maybe even someone long dead. And it’s as if a hand has come out, and taken yours."
